An Indian restaurant famous for its mixed grills is to open a new gastropub Soho Tavern in Solihull

A restaurant that has been closed for a year has been taken over by a popular Indian restaurant in Birmingham with ambitious plans to turn it into a modern gastropub.

Work began this week on a major refurbishment of the former Beeches site at Hampton in Arden, near Solihull, ready for the opening of the new Soho Tavern.

The owners already run a well-known restaurant of the same name in Park Road, which has become famous for its mixed grills and spicy chilli crisps.

The launch of the Marsh Lane gastro pub is part of a three-site expansion plan that will take Soho Tavern’s portfolio to six, following another new opening in Walsall later this year.

CGI images offer a glimpse of what the restaurant will look like inside – with fresh, modern decor, comfy seating, greenery hanging from ceiling lights, and sweeping views of the bowling green and Hampton countryside – in-Arden.

There will also be a separate drinks area with a striking green bar and sports TV.

A planning application for the second stage of the renovation, which would see the expansion of the building, should be submitted in the coming months.

Jas Sahota, 32, will run the new site alongside group manager Mikey Singh.

He told BirminghamLive: “It will be traditional style Indian food with an English twist, but the place itself will not be your traditional Indian restaurant.

“It’s more of an Indian gastropub, with a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere.

“We’ll be showing Sky Sports and we’ll have 12 beers on tap.

“It’s been in need of a makeover for some time and in Hampton in Arden you expect the pubs to be top quality so I think people would like to see something done with it.

“Our unique selling point is the beer garden.

“There is a large outdoor area at Beeches between the pub and the bowling green and we have hired a landscaper to make the most of the space while still maintaining those views.

“I really think this has the potential to be the nicest in the Birmingham area.”

Bosses hope the new Soho Tavern will be up and running by April/May this year.

They are now accepting applications for 20 new positions, including manager, assistant manager, cocktail mixologists and service staff.
