In general, punctuality is not an Indian quality because people in India take this problem lightly unlike in the West.
The IST Indian Standard Time is also seen by many as an extendable Indian time. In most cases, this can be true, especially if you are dealing with an Indian government ministry or public sector organization in India.
However, in the Indian private sectors, the situation is certainly better than that of government organizations. If you are dealing with Indians who have a professional attitude towards work, then things are happening on time.
In my own experience doing business in India, I have seen that when people are desperate to get a contract or a job, they are definitely on time or even early. It is only when they are unprofessional or if they think their job is safe that they are late. Indians have a strong perception that things happen on time in Western countries and they expect their Western counterparts to be on time.
In general, punctuality is not an Indian quality but this Indian habit would certainly develop in you patience and tolerance. If you want to continue your business activity in India without going crazy, you need to develop serenity in the face of events or situations that you may not like. This quality of equanimity will certainly take you on the path of Buddha to enlightenment.
Point to remember: In general, punctuality is not an Indian quality because people in India take this issue lightly unlike in the west.
You need to be prepared to face the reality of people who are late for meetings or for work. In fact, if you are going to a meeting or special function where an Indian VIP is expected, then be patient because often Indian VIPs arrive late.
