Indian restaurant in east London so dirty it receives ZERO food hygiene score


An east London restaurant has been criticized by inspectors as unsanitary after dirt and grease were found all over the restaurant and kitchen. A Newham Council inspector said the ChotpotiWala Indian restaurant in Forest Gate had serious problems which would need to be addressed to ensure safe service of food to customers. The manager added that the restaurant’s very cramped kitchen should be deep cleaned.

The Newham Council inspector gave the East London restaurant a hygiene score of zero – the worst possible score on a scale of zero to five. The low rating means major improvement is needed, with the manager saying the cleanliness of the restaurant and the way it handles food safety needed urgent action.

The manager told the restaurant in his report that he should introduce a food management system, proper allergen information for customers and better storage, as well as deep cleaning. The inspector said in his report that the restaurant had “grease and food debris [on] floors, hard-to-reach areas and walls”.

They added that the kitchen vents were ‘very dirty with grease and dust’ and there was ‘deep cleaning required [for the] kitchen”. The council official said in his report that there was a “very small area for preparation, storage and cooking” and that “the kitchen, counter, appliances and hard-to-reach areas “all needed a deep cleaning.

The inspector also stated in his report that there was no sink in the main kitchen, which the restaurant should have, and that while he found no problem with rodents, he recommended clean hard-to-reach areas of the restaurant for pest control.

The dismal hygiene score of zero means that the restaurant will have to improve considerably before the next inspection if it wants to improve its rating. The Local Democracy Reporting Service attempted to contact the ChotpotiWala restaurant for comment.
