NEW DELHI: The Scientific and Technical Research Board (SERB), a central statutory body under the Ministry of Science and Technology, will soon launch an indigenous “digital games research” initiative to develop innovative high-end R&D capabilities. range and prototypes of immersive games with a focus on Indian culture and value system, community centered games, fine arts and social sciences.
The Council, in this process, will connect universities, start-ups and industry to rapidly scale high-end R&D concepts for the development of Indian game engines, procedural content generators and design patents on games centered on the players and the community.
“Digital games and simulations present exciting scientific and technological problems for research and translation, leading to significant commercial potential globally,” an official note reads. The SERB supports basic research in emerging fields of science and engineering as part of its core and distinctive mandate.
Apart from learning and recreation, locally developed mobile games will also help promote and popularize Indian culture and heritage. Innovation in the process will include cross-cutting research in engineering, computer science, visual design, fine arts and social sciences.
“SERB will soon announce a research initiative on digital games, in collaboration with the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE),” tweeted Sandeep Verma, Secretary of SERB.
The Council offers the JC Bose National Fellowship to scientists and engineers for outstanding performance and contributions, and the Ramanujan Fellowship to brilliant scientists from around the world to take up scientific research positions in India, especially scientists who wish to return to India from the stranger.
