Tried Wirral’s ‘Best Indian Restaurant’ and it was a curry lover’s dream – Phoebe Barton

A family run restaurant has long topped TripAdvisor’s ‘Best Indian Restaurants in Wirral’ list, so I put it to the test to see if it’s as good as the locals say.

Heswall Tandoori is based on Pensby Road and is a small restaurant that also offers takeaway. The curry house recipes have been passed down from generation to generation and include classic dishes and modern creations.

In addition to being named the best indian in WirralHeswall Tandoori is also the second best restaurant in Wilal. Overall it has a 4.5 rating on TripAdvisor.

Heard a lot of good things about Heswall Tandoori so was looking forward to trying it out for myself.

I was ordering for the two of us and we chose chicken korma (£8.95) with rice pilaf (£2.75), makonwalla tandoori king prawns which included rice pilaf (£14.50), peshwari naan ( £2.70), a garlic naan (£2.70) and four poppadoms (70p each) served with a selection of condiments including mango chutney, finely chopped onions and cucumber.

Heswall Tandoori does not offer delivery, so you must collect your order from the restaurant. When I picked it up I was told that onion bhajis (usually £2.85) had been given on the house which was a lovely gesture.

Chicken korma, rice pilaf, onion bhajis, pashwari naan, garlic naan and poppadoms.

As I’m not a fan of very spicy dishes, the chicken korma has been my favorite for years, and the one at Heswall Tandoori was one of the best I’ve ever had. There were lots of soft chicken pieces and the sauce was thick and creamy. It was full of flavor and the coconut wasn’t too overwhelming like I’ve found with other kormas in the past.

The king prawn makonwalla tandoori had large meaty prawns and there were almonds, raisins and a touch of butter in the tandoori sauce which was rich and had a nice mild spiciness. My takeout partner is a huge seafood fan and they were very impressed with the flavor and quality.

The rice pilaf was perfectly cooked and the poppadoms with the accompanying condiments were delicious. The complimentary onion bhajis were also perfectly cooked – soft on the inside, crispy on the outside and full of flavor.

Both naan breads were soft, thick and chewy. The garlic naan had small pieces of garlic sprinkled in the batter which was very tasty, but the peshwari naan stole the show as its coconut flavor was amazing. I dipped small pieces of it into my korma sauce which was a perfect combination.

Overall, the Heswall Tandoori takeaways were absolutely delicious and they weren’t oily or greasy like some takeaways can be. You can really taste the freshness of the ingredients and the love and passion that went into preparing the dishes. I can’t wait to order from here again.
